I baptized my niece, Madison, today. I went to my brother’s and sister’s in law’s house this morning and picked her up, and after a stop for chocolate milk and chocolate donuts, we had a talk about Jesus, baptism, life in the 3rd grade and how come God always existed and how nobody made Him and how weird that is.
When I asked her to tell me about her desire to be baptized and how she came to decide she wanted to do such a thing, she replied, “I want to be a real Christian.” We talked for a long time about what that meant, and without going into how we explored the facts of the atonement (which we did, just without all the fancy words), my niece, Madi; all eight years of her, preached a great sermon before we even got to church.
“I want to be a real Christian, Uncle Phil…I want to keep asking Jesus to forgive me for what I do wrong and I remember that he might have even been scared to go to the cross, but he did because he loves us so much….Like that woman, I think she was Jesus’ friend, who went to his grave and cried when he wasn’t there, but then she found out he was alive, and that means I can trust him and that he loves me.”
Thank you, precious Madi. I want to be a real Christian, too.
